Wataaamelon!!! LIVE at Ware Center for Imani Juneteenth Jubilee 2023
I wrote, "Wataaamelon”, for George Floyd after his murder in 2020 to shift the climactic energy, the trauma, to uplift him, his family and those in the Afrikan Diaspora. "Wataaamelon”, is a metaphor I use to symbolize Black wealth. My poem doesn’t focus on racist tropes or negative stereotypes but instead is a celebration of its Afrikan origins and the contributions of Black life, culture and community as a figurative embodiment of the watermelon fruit. This is my favorite performance of it thus far. Working on recording it for your streaming pleasure.
